Project Description:

The SP26 Energy Storage team analyzed data of the location and use of generators on Cornell’s campus. The definition of the use of generators includes the periodic testing and the employment of back-up generators during power shortages. That data was used to determine the highest priority generators that are used the most frequently.


The team continued working with battery energy storage systems with the goal of understanding their financial and environmental benefits. The team compared the environmental effects (positive and negative) of diesel generators, natural gas generators, and battery energy storage systems. analyzed how the replacement of generators with battery energy storage systems could support Cornell’s goal of having ‘net zero’ carbon emissions by 2030. It was decided that the highest priority generators were in most need of replacement due to their higher carbon footprint. 


Assumptions for the BESS were made based on the data and research conducted in previous semesters. New research was conducted on the lifetime and efficiency of generators to make a direct comparison between the two. 


The team completed an analysis of the environmental and human health implications of natural gas and diesel generators, mostly based on air quality and greenhouse gas implications. Data from previous semesters were used to compare this to the amount of carbon saved by BESS.


The team plans to continue this project during FA26 to draw more concrete conclusions.
